Self-Assessment Tool
Self Evaluation for good practice.... in response to expressed needs at LC 2004.  Developed by DSF in consultation with a team of practitioners this online tool will allow programs to self asses against a number of key indicators of good practice, identify their strengths and weaknesses, see how they rate against an average, and find contacts/tools to assist them develop in areas where they are not so strong. Red Cross Community Challenge

Red Cross Community Challenge The Red Cross Community Challenge resources facilitate service learning giving students opportunities to engage with humanitarian principles which drive community involvement and authentic student led community partnerships. The resource kit provides students with the means to identify a local need and then to plan, design, implement, evaluate and reflect upon a short-term community service project meeting those needs. Classroom Connections | Cultivating Peace Resources



Developed by a Canadian organisation, these useful resources assist teachers and community leaders to educate for change. The programs created through this initiative encourage youth to respect diversity, think globally, value human rights, recognise injustice and respond to conflict with methods other than violence. The resources engage children and youth in the search for a culture of peace in their homes, their schools, their neighbourhoods and their global community. American and Canadian Learning Choices

Over the years Canadian and North American Education departments, programs and schools have developed a range of alternatives to engage their young people. From small individual programs to whole schools offering individualised, student-centered learning. Student Councils and Beyond - Active Student Participation

Roger Holdsworth, Australian Youth Research Centre, has recently published a 108-page book about active student participation in primary and secondary schools. It is a compilation of articles published in Connectover about the last 15 years, which challenge and extend and support the operation of Student Councils (SRCs etc). The book is full of case studies, strategies, resources, work-sheets and so on. A useful resource for teachers, students and those who work with student councils. Cost is $30 inc postage. An international view on Learning Choices


Production Schools are oganisations based on the principle of providing a ‘safety net’ for students at risk of dropping out of school before reaching either a trade qualification or university education. Lin Farrington, Co-ordinator of Studentworks in Launceston presents her findings following a visit to Danish Production Schools in 2004.

Enterprise Education @ Eumnundi Markets

The Eumundi markets is a 'how to' resource that was developed on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and is available to enterprise students wishing to combine their business ventures with market stalls in their local communities. The Eumundi model can be universally applied to varying communities, and has recently been adapted by enterprise students who participated in the 2004 Learning Choices Expo. Where's the Party at?

"Where's the party at?" is an online resource to support the development of reading, writing, numeracy and general skills for youth literacy learners.

"Where's the party at?" presents a range of youth centred interactive learning activities. These activities are exciting, colourful and engaging, and embed the literacy and numeracy learning in a relevant context. Developed by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. Plan-It Youth Mentoring Program Resources

Plan-It Youth is a youth mentoring project operating in a number of regions around Australia. It provides support to young people, through community mentoring, exposing them to other experiences of life and increasing their opportunities for a successful transition from education to further training or employment. Outcomes for Youth at Risk


A resource kit
This resource kit was developed by The Project Steering Committee drawn together by DET NSW in conjunction with a workshop program. Its purpose is to assist in the development and delivery of post compulsory educational programs that produce successful outcomes for youth at risk. The kit was developed with funding from Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).

Staff from ACE, TAFE NSW and community organisations also contributed their comments to the development of this kit.

Developed in the UK, this programme provides information, advice and guidance on all aspects of preparing for the entering the workplace. It is designed to give a thorough overview of each stage of gaining employment; from wanting to enter into employment, right through to what you do when you get a job. The programme has ten concise modules of key information, each with its own questionnaire to test understanding. Modules include: Work and You, Developing Your Skills, Developing Your Personal Qualities, Appropriate Attitudes, Where to Start, Getting an Interview, On the Day, Starting Work, Developing Health and Safety Skills, Learn While You Earn. Real Success is a DVD and CD ROM educational resource that aims to encourage positive perception of success in young people, with detailed worksheets and teacher guidelines. Developed by youth practitioners and educators at The Spot Youth Service, the DVD uses a variety of media to engage young people, while simultaneously improving their literacy skills.
